New Intel "Penryn" Xeon Processors due out in November 11, 2007.

It seems as though intel processors have been aggressively cutting prices every 3 months or so. First in May for the core2duo lineup, Second in August for the intel Quad Core lineup, and in November, new "Penryn" xeon processors will be out in the market with clock speeds ranging from 2-3ghz, and 12mb cache. This processor is targeted primarily for servers.

Nokia-branded batteries at risk of overheating -- 46 million devices affected

Here we go again kids. After all those notorious fires related to the batteries used by the world's largest handset manufacturer, Nokia has issued a product advisory for the BL-5C, Nokia-branded battery. That's right, Nokia branded, not just those third-party knockoffs everyone had been pointing the finger at previously. A staggering 46 million batteries in fact, all manufactured by Matsushita (aka, Panasonic) between December 2005 and November 2006, are said to be at risk of "dislodge." According to the release, "in very rare cases" the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries could short circuit leading to an explosive burn. Nokia goes on to say that the danger only exists while charging the battery and of the 100 or so reported incidents, "no serious injuries or property damage have been reported." Oh really? So the loss of a leg no longer constitutes serious injury? The BL-5C is one of just 14 different batteries used in Nokia products so be sure to check the list below to see if your phone is one of the 52 Nokia handsets affected. If you're unlucky (or lucky, depending upon your viewpoint) enough to be affected, then Nokia will provide a replacement battery free of charge.

Update: We just received word from Nokia that the "overheating" referred to in their advisory will not result in an explosion or even a fire. At worst, batteries will "overheat, expand, and pop out of the phone (due to the expansion of the battery)." Of course, it states right on the battery that it "may explode if damaged" and "do not short circuit" so this little clarification likely won't make you feel any better now will it?

1. Mojopac - it lets you install almost any software on your flash drive, save your desktop and wallpaper settings and even synchronize with your my documents, my pictures internet browsing history, cookies and so much more. This allows you to be totally mobile even without a laptop. All your settings and favorite softwares are always with you. When you plug your flash drive into any other computer, all your programs are there. It's almost too good to be true.

Basically, it allows you to have a 2nd desktop on top of the host computer's desktop. In this 2nd desktop, your flash drive becomes the c: drive and you have a windows xp interface too, complete with desktop, start button, system tray and all. All are customizable of course and you can install any program into this 2nd desktop environment. All settings and installations are saved in your flash drive leaving you no footprints whatsoever to the host computer.

Of course, all these great things come with a price. a price tag that is. and it only runs on windows xp, and a usb2.0 hi speed flash drive. And of course, the higher the capacity your flash drive is, the more programs you could run on it. Though I wouldn't recommend installing the greatest and latest softwares on your flash drive as read/write speeds are slower and your host computer might not be have a fast PC.

Vista Upgrade?..... Not!

Back in the summer of this year, i really wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista. and so i did. With is shiny new aero interface and better search abilities, i Hoped that it would help me be more effective in my work, be more efficient, and help find files quicker. Alas, it was not so.

Here's what I found out:

What I liked:
1. the quick search in the start button (windows orb) is a great addition.
2. windows start button keeps everything nice and neat
3. the glossy / semitransparent new aero interface
4. Windows Sidebar & widgets (if accompanied by a widescreen lcd monitor)

What I disliked:
1. my tv tuner card(leadtek winfast tv2000xp expert) doesnt work properly even after upgrading to new drivers and softwares... yes it does allow me to watch television but when i press record, it records only a silent movie. Yes, Yes, it might be that my built-in sound card may be incompatible with vista but its hard for me to accept that a motherboard named (asrock lga775 vista hdtv) is not fully compatible with windows vista. I already updated the sound card driver to the latest realtek release but still, the problem persists. The Winfast PVR software doesn't see the AUX-In/CD-Line In connector of the motherboard, where my tv tuner card hardware is connected, thus no sound. Also, there were minor issues regarding the tv software itself including, the volume control display and channel display doesn't disappear after changing channels or changing the volume. Quite a hassle.

2. many other softwares need to be updated or buy new ones for it to work in vista.... on my first install of vista way back in march 2007, and tried to install autocad 2007, an error message poped out telling me that autocad 2007 is not compatible with vista. I continued with the installation even after seeing the warning in hopes of being able to run it in compatibility mode but alas, it doesn't work at all. To think that a software that states that is the 2007 version is incompatible with vista is propulstrous. It was only after some internet searching that i found out that one needs at least Autocad 2007 SP1 for Autocad to run in Windows Vista. Adobe Creative Suite on the otherhand installs properly, and works but the interface sure is kinda whacked out due to the big close button of windows vista. Simply put, Adobe Creative Suite CS2 in vista looks ugly, and cluttered. It is obvious that it was not made for Windows Vista. This means having to buy Adobe CS3 products and Autocad 2008 to be ho-hum in vista. Alas, one needs to upgrade one's computer hardware for these high-end programs to work.

3. the new interface makes it hard to find and tweak the settings that i want.

4. when using flash drives, all explorer windows and files and programs open must first be close for it to be safely removed.

5. slow startup and shutdown. even with a dual-core processor and 1gb memory, it takes more than a minute to load and shutdown windows

6. 1gb of memory is just not enough.... as more and more programs are opened, the areo interface eats up more and more memory, not to mention the windows sidebar widgets and other explorer animation effects. 2gb is a minimum for running windows vista smoothly.

7. some programs just wont work!

8. the new interface needs a minimum of 19" widescreen monitor to work effectively.
I currently have a 17" crt monitor and it just doesn't cut it. The windows sidebar and new windows explorer and aero interface is looks great and all but it eats up so much desktop space that my 17" monitor @ 1024x768 resolution seems more like an 14" monitor @ 800x600 resolution.

9. And the greatest hassle of them all, Windows User Access Control (UAC). This bugs you everytime you install anything or change the settings in windows or when an application is running in WinXP compatibility mode or when copying, changing & deleting files in the Program Files directory. This annoys me so much! Its like i get 30 UAC prompts everyday just for doing my daily tasks. These prompts are more hassle due to its nature of having to flicker the screen when it prompts. I know i could turn it off but doing so means sacrificing security as what I've read so far. Turning it off makes Windows Vista even less secure than Windows XP.

Conclusion:
If you're a power user or a graphics/CAD professional, do not upgrade to Vista unless you have the cash to spend on upgrading your computer. (minimum req'ts: 19"lcd monitor, 2gb ddr2 memory, 128mb 128bit dx9.0c dedicated video card, dual-core processor, new tv tuner card, all new software)

If you just use your computer for word processing, surfing the net and listening to music and watch videos, Vista may prove to be right for you. (just make sure you have at least 1gb of memory, and a 128mb 128bit dx9.0c dedicated video card)

Now they have introduced the apple iPhone. the iPhone. i hadn't seen the pictures and read the articles about it, i wouldn't even believe it to be true. a 320x480 touchscreen, built in OS X, wifi, bluetooth2.0, and 2mpx camera, 4GB/8GB memory, this 11.6mm thick phone is Apple's way of saying its now a full fledged Consumer Electronics (CE) Company.

These features are close to what i would want in a cellphone. Now, the only thing left to do is to make it slimmer and lighter, add a 2x optical zoom, make digital pictures on par with dedicated digital still cameras, sell it at around 15,000 pesos and we got an all-in-one phone!

What am i up to lately

For the past week, I have been scouring the web for reviews on what camera to buy that has just the right features i need to help me improve on photography. Right now, I am stuck with my 4 year old digicam. It's a point and shoot canon ixus v2. Though i have taken good pictures with this cam, the lack of manual controls leaves me stagnant in learning about true photography... me having full control over how i would like the picture to come out instead of the camera automatically adjusting almost everything by itself. Plus, the limitations of having only 2 megapixels, slow overall performance, and only 2x of zoom leaves me just about in line with having a camera phone these days.

After a few Googling here and there it has become quite apparent that there are only a few cameras on top of every list that i have seen. The most bang for the buck camera for now if you don't mind the bulk is the 7.1 megapixel Canon Powershot A62o which sells for around php12,500 in R. Hidalgo Quiapo. Then i looked at the amateur-dslr line wherein the 6 megapixel Nikon d50 w/ lens kit is on top which sells for around php35,000. Then the compromise, the 6-megapixel Canon Powershot S3 IS which sells for php21,000 seems to be the right choice. With its 12x optical zoom, image stabilization and high quality video output, its a perfect all-in-one camera. Now, i just need to make some money to be able to buy this camera then problem solved. :)

By the way, rumors have it that canon will be releasing new digicams soon either on the 25th of August or in Photokina in September.... and its a whopping 22megapixel D-SLR camera! I do hope that it will lower prices even more for me to be able to buy the camera sooner! :)

my first spyware annoyance for my new computer! Spywarequake is an annoying spyware that installs itself to one's computer and resides on one's system tray. It alerts one of fake spyware detection alerts every now and then. When you click on the alert message, you're directed to its website where you can buy the actual product. It's not harmful as other spywares that iv encountered in the past like the blaster and sasser worms which doesn't even let one use one's computer due to its activation of a countdown timer sequence after a minute you start windows, but its pretty annoying though. I also don't feel that my data is safe with a spyware around in my computer. It took me half a day to be able to finally erase every last piece of this spyware.

After waiting for a quarter of a year and pondering for a week if its the right time to upgrade my old computer. It came to the point that i can't wait any longer. My four year old processor and motherboard wasn't able to keep up with the updated programs i have installed in my computer. Multitasking was a chore. Painfully slow startup and shutdown times.

Heeding to the recommendation by my classmate of buying a budget dual core processor and motherboard. I can now finally experience first hand the true power of a dual core system. Where in the past clock speed was the only measurement of how fast a PC is, now i can conclude that acquiring a dual core system is more beneficial than buying the fastest single core processor in the market. Price wise, its(dual core processor) simply too affordable now to ignore. Motherboards nowadays are jam packed with built in features that doesn't dissapoint. The built in high definition sound that's 7.1 channel capable, built-in video with direct x9.0 and pixel shader 2.0 support is a far cry from what was available just four years ago. The advantage of having a video card with native Direct x9.0 support is clearly evident in my tv application. Icons became smoother especially around its edges. With the updated sound hardware, sound quality even only using my stereo speaker is improved. Bass drums and high pitch sounds can now be more clearly differentiated. Multitasking now is a breeze. I can now record my favorite tv shows while opening several other programs like mozilla firefox, ms word, even the latest adobe cs2 products without even feeling a single hangup or slow down. Startup and shutdown times have been drastically improved. From the 2 minutes i took me in the past, now its been reduced to only 30 seconds.

Since i bought only two PC components, i opted to install them myself instead of having to pay for the service. I read online guides on how to install a processor and motherboard and even downloaded and read the manual of the motherboard i was going to use before I even bought the stuff. Everything had to be prepared beforehand. I backed up all my files into a separate hard drive, downloaded key components like an updated antivirus software and made sure that I had all my installers with me at hand. Harware wise, I checked if i had the tools i would need like screws, spacers, philips screw driver and my long nose pliers.

I was excited to build my first computer. I compare it to building a lego set which i was fond of doing in my childhood years. The only difference is that computer parts are more delicate and one wrong move may jeopardize the entire system and my monetary investment on it. Suprisingly, everything just snapped in place. Only little force was required in placing all of the parts together. I only had trouble with the CPU fan heatsink for it took quite some force for it to lock in place. I had a hard time because the instruction manual said that i should install the motherboard first to the case before i install the heatsink fan onto the cpu.... Then, to install the fan, just use one's thumb to push down on the four locks. In practice, it took me half an hour of figuring out how to snap it in place. I had to figure out how it locks into place. Then, why i could only snap only two locks in place at a time. In the end, i used the back end of my long nose pliers to acquire enough force to snap the last to locks in place. The force of only my thumb wasn't enough and my thumb still hurts up to now. Next time, I'll do what my classmate said and snap the heatsink fan in place before placing the motherboard before placing it in the case. In that way, il not need pliers or a thumb of steel to snap the locks in place.

I must say that upgrading my processor and motherboard is one of the best buying decision i ever did wherein i am able to fully utilize the power of the technology I've purchased at a price that's a bargain in my point of view. I was able to learn a lot in building an entire computer set. Now, I am much more confident that I am able to actually build a computer system and not just give out specifications on what to buy.

Thank you very much to coy for all the help and tips thoughout all the stages of my pc upgrade. The processor and motherboard combination he suggested is simply superb!

Waah!! no internet for a day!

When i woke up, i turned on my computer as usual and tried to connect to the internet. Hoping to be able to read my daily technology updates, download the files i have stored in the net, view google earth, update virus definitions, research work and such. Usually, it would take my modem three tries to connect to the internet but this time its different. After 10 redial attempts, it was still unable to connect to the internet. It was just then that i saw the information prompt, "No Dial Tone Detected". Time stopped for me for a split second... I said to myself, what!! this can't be! I still need to do so much in the internet! Hoping it was just a glitch, I checked our landline. Much to my dismay, there was really no dial tone!!! As the idea of not being able to go to the world wide web sets in, I start to say to myself, }what now? I have checked all the phone cables in the house to no avail. It's a hopeless battle. my day is officially ruined." My mind is boggled on what i need to do. I can't concentrate on our plate nor can I do anything productive. Darn! I wasn't able to accomplish anything today!

Such is my dependence on my computer and to the internet. That being disconnected from it is not an option, that being "out of the coverage area" will affect every other aspect of my daily life. How sad.

Conclusion:

The electrician said that both of our phone lines were cut... literally cut outside of our building! There were also several others that have been done the same. What cruelty! Such wickedness! People are really getting more twisted every passing moment! Darn! I don't know who is doing this but its getting pretty annoying already primarily because this wasn't the first time this has happened. Once every year, our phone line gets tampered with. I guess this is one more reason for all the telecommunications line be placed underground instead of on high posts. Now that everything is working once again, I, too am back online to 100% capacity and productivity. The haze in my mind has lifted. I can now see clearly everything that i need to do!

Processors right now top out at around 5Ghz (5 billion computations per second). We can do so much with our computer already. Imagine what a desktop with 500 times the power of current top of the line processors can do! Multitasking, Realistic Looking Games, a more intuitive user interface, and the like. You can be rest assured that IBM is turning these dreams into reality with their research on transistor technology. It's still a long ways off but im sure that the processor will eventually be finished within our lifetime. Right now, we just have to imagine of what we can do with that monster of a processor so that when it comes, we can be able to use it to its utmost potential.

Intel Future Roadmap

After the soon to be released Core 2 Duo processor slated for July 23, 2006, what's next for the processor giant? Processors' will only continue to be miniaturized in an aim for even more computing power. Three Years ago, processors are at 120nm in size, now its at 65nm, by 2010, it will be 22nm. What does this mean for us consumers? Simply put, it means faster processors at lower prices!

"I am healthy, I am young, I have yet to graduate college, I have yet to accomplish my goals in life." seems to be good reasons. and yet, no one knows when he/she will exactly pass away. It may not be now, not even next month, but the fact is we don't know. That is both the beauty and cruelty of life. We only live once in this world. It's a privelege to be living. It might have been better off if one was not born so as to be no need to endure the several hardships in life but still, it is good to be alive. Being only a one way street, life always reminds us that there is an end. Nothing in this world is permanent. Isn't the fact that we only live once makes one all the more excited of living? Living is a risk, that's why we should make the best out of it so that if our time suddenly comes, we have no regrets.

Living life to the fullest doesn't mean that one can commit all the worldly sins that plague mankind. Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Pride, Envy, and Wrath are but temptations of the flesh. One will never be satisfied by fulfilling these emotions. So why are they present? I believe its a manifestation of our imperfection as humans. Its proof that we may be able to fathom all mysteries and knowledge with our science, but alas, one cannot become perfect nor become a god.

We humans are so weak. We can only move about in the present. Once a second has passed, it can never be regained. No matter how much we complain, time will not go backwards. We also can't foresee the future. Yes, yes, we may have plans and schedules of our own but all of these are just our way to organize our daily tasks. We don't truly know what will exactly happen at any point in the future. That's how life is... unexpected. We are free to choose the path we want to take! That is a good thing! for if one has predetermined one's future, living it would be boring, bland, and kind of hopeless. It takes the fun out of living. One will not be able to endure hardships, make mistakes in order for one to realize one's gifts and
talents.

time is not absolute as everyone perceives it. Time is relative and unique to each and every individual and of nature as well. It only seems to be absolute for we are all living on the surface of the earth... following the movement and rotation of the earth and of the heavens (planets). Time for a person in a fast jet is actually slower that that of one who is standing on earth. Therefore, one will age faster if one only stands still
rather than be in motion.

in life, success may not always be so easy to reach. contrary to what we may perceive, success is not commonly gained in the first try. Freak Rainstorm Hits Manila

Today started out very calmly and quite normal. Our professor for our afternoon class didn't show up just as expected.

Day turned to night... Alas! time to go home! We have just reached the lobby of our building and SURPRISE! The worst case scenario suddenly happened... From the darkness of the sky, poured rain exactly like during a super typhoon. It rained tremendously hard! With winds so strong, and droplets more like water bullets. There's no way one could go out there and not be defeated by heavy downpour of rain.

It's a hopeless battle against nature. It flooded almost everything in Manila within 30 minutes! I thought to myself sarcasticly, this a great way to start off our first week in school... to be sranded in the university. It's a blessing that one of my classmates offered a ride home or else i would have been stranded in the university until midnight.

First Day Bummer

our college is always messed up during the first day of class, first the office said that we don't have classes, just a mass, then by 10am of that day, they changed their position to there is classes if the professors appears.

As always, freshmen had a hard time figuring out if they should wait for their professors in class or just skip it all together. Wherein the best choice is to just not attend class because professors usually are generous enough to give the students the first day off and not attend class.

For me, this setup is very disappointing for a college that has been around for more than 50 years, you think that they would have ironed out all the first day issues by now. Excited freshmen loose their enthusiasm to study, students see the lack of professionalism of the college, hence act in accordance with the college's lack thereof.

As for the enrollment day, i didn't see any signs of when the first day of class is, causing us, students to make speculations.

I just wish that when announcements are given, that they be implemented. If they say the first day of class is today, it is really today. That yearly schedules be are handed out to students early in the semester for students to know in advance when activities held. That student's inquiries always be taken seriously and answered competently.

Don't get me wrong, im not angry or mad at the school, nothing is perfect after all. i guess, i just had too high of an expectation from the college from the beginning, on which i had heard several praises of, being a center of excellence and all.

In hindsight, i believe that, we, students make up the institution which is the university. We are the ones who must give pride to our school and show everyone else how good we are, which should reflect how we were taught in the college that we belong.

i guess this is how much free time i have nowadays. i have time to fiddle around with different programs. my life at home is arranging, and cataloging my files. Tidying up on the files on my computer, etc. Blogging, Reading Technology News on the Internet, reading forums, posting my old computer wares on TPC, and so on. One could say i am bored. But I for one am not complaining coz i know that in a few weeks time, il be too busy in school work to do any of these things.

The picture on the left is an icon i made using PS CS2 with no specific purpose. I hope that this may be a stepping stone to making better graphics in the future that has a purpose.

The Call That SAVED my SUMMER

here's the story.

yesterday, i went to mcad with my friends to enrol in viz.
to our dismay, there were only two slots available.
the problem is there were three of us.
so i let them enrol first while i signed up for the waiting list.

i can still remember what the lady told me... that there are no guarantees
that i may be able to join my friends sked.
what a bummer.... my summer vacation plans are ruined if that happens!!!!
il be bummed for the entire may... doing household chores and more....
that is not related to my course!!!

but God is good!!! mcad jz called and told me that there is a vacancy...
someone backed out and i can now enrol with the same sked as my friends!
yehey! it was a turn for the better of my bummed out day. :)

i believe that if you appreciate or admire someone,
you should at least let her know at least in APPROPRIATE
TIMES. i believe that there's no harm in showing
your admiration to another coz basically, all people
want and need to be appreciated. Caution! One shouldn't
be caught up with too much emotion cause its the one that
will make you do the most irrational things. Be yourself.
if your not ready to be in a relationship right now,
don't force yourself. The time will come when you will
find the right person. As for now, you should share
the love you have especially to the ones you appreciate
most. Remember, Be Yourself! don't do anything that
you wouldn't normally do. You may be able to put up to
it for a week, even months, but hopefully not even years
coz eventually, your true self will show. Your habits,
your likes, dislikes, how you look without all the beauty
products. If the person you like don't like you the way
you are, then its goodbye to him/her. There are plenty
other of people out there. But you should also be wary,
and keep a close eye on your bad habits, not so good
traits, and other weaknesses. For if these weaknesses
are the reasons why people don't like you, you should
change for the better. Be Yourself! achieve what you
want to achieve in life, study hard, play hard, enjoy
life! Work to make this world a better place to live
in! I'm sure you'll find the right person for you and
if not, the right person will find you! You should also
share your love to as much people as possible. If you
admire someone, there's no better time to tell her or
show her you admire her than now. Caution! again, you
SHOULD NOT! fall only for a pretty face! I mean, don't
fall in love to a person just because of their outside
appearance! That's NOT LOVE! That's Infatuation! I believe
that beauty is so over rated nowadays. I'm sure beauty
can get you to high places but the downside is you'll find
it very difficult to find true love... simply because you
are beautiful. Men can be so simple-minded that its
hard for them to resist to be attracted to a beautiful
face and a beautiful body. Men are men after all. They
are easily tempted by a woman's physical appearance and
to those who has curves in the right places. Men that are
into this should double their defenses cause appreciation
is one thing and lust is another. If perverted thoughts

morals for the worse without you even noticing it.

maybe attraction is based on personal preference
but the problem is our personal preference
is not personal after all
it is subject to the environment in which
we live in
and the media brainwasing us?

do we need love?
yes.
can we live without it?
definitely not.
is it easy to attain?
yes and no.
if the love one is talking about is with
regards to friends and family, to acquaintances
and even to enemies
its almost easier said than done
except to our enemies.

of all the things in life one can attain,
wealth, in monetary terms
material things, jewelry, tech stuff, etc.
love, is the one hardest thing to attain

maybe its because love is not a thing.
its an emotion? a way of thinking?
why is love needed anyways?
can one be happy without love?

of all the distractions we have now
in terms of fun, games, etc.
we have playstation games, pc games, arcades
cellphones, mp3 players, palm pilots,
heck! even the world wide web
are we being self-centered with each and every
passing moment?

these distractions are brought about by
the rapid advance in computer technology.
one may delve into other realities by immersing
oneself in role playing games and multi-player
online games but the thought of having someone
to care for and be cared for will forever remain
it will haunt us even if we distract ourselves
with neverending work and games.

i guess no one person can live in this world and
be happy by living as an island.
